Joan C. Grothe, age 79, of Battle Creek, Iowa passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at her residence of Battle Creek, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. The Rev. Kevin J. Freese will officiate.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Christensen – Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, Iowa. Interment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek, Iowa. The Christensen - Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Joan Carol Grothe was born on December 12, 1936 in Plymouth County Iowa, Merrill, IA. The daughter of Harry Lehmann and Helen (Harms) Lehmann.

She lived in LeMars, IA until age 6, then moved with her family to Battle Creek, IA. She graduated from Battle Creek High School. In her high school years she enjoyed playing third base for the first girls Iowa State champion softball team in 1955. She married Bryan Grothe in 1957, they lived in Pender, NE. for 21 years, and they were blessed with two children a son Scott and daughter Sandi. She was employed at Janke Auto, City Clerk, and as the Thurston County Deputy Clerk. They moved to Battle Creek in 1980.

She was employed at First State Bank, Midstate Management, CB Electronics and retired from Midwest Industries. Through the years she enjoyed her membership at First Presbyterian Church. She worked at funerals and donated food and also the Lions Club, PW quilting circle, and worked and donated for the church Harvest Dinner. She belonged to the Battle Creek Women’s Club, American Legion Auxiliary unit 364 in Battle Creek, and was a past member of the Medical Auxiliary board of Willow Dale.

Joan was also active in bowling leagues and a member of the Ida Grove Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame, She also belonged to the 600 club with her high series being 622.

In her spare time she enjoyed bowling, fishing in Minnesota, SUDOKO, reading, flower gardens, baking and crocheting. Most of all spending time with her family, she enjoyed baking and cooking for her family, and supported them in their activities; especially her grandchildren. She was a busy mother and homemaker.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her children, Scott (Deb Scibior) Grothe of Boise, Idaho, Sandi Hudson of Leawood, Kansas; grandchildren: Tara O’Brien, Abby Hudson, Nikolaos Hudson, Logan Scibior-Grothe, Isaac Scibior-Grothe; one sister, Judy (Edward) Schmidt, two brothers, Jerome (Janiece) Lehmann and Dale Lehmann all of Battle Creek; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Helen Lehmann; husband, Bryan Grothe; and parents-in-law, Herman and Louise Grothe.
