Jeffrey Scott Bottjen was born on February 10th 1966 in Le Mars, IA to Neal and Mary Bottjen.  He grew up in Kingsley Iowa and was proud big brother to Jason and Jackie.  After high school he attended Iowa State University where his love of the Cyclones began.  He met his wife Colleen Sullivan and they married on July 8th, 1988. Jeffrey Bottjen walked a little taller that day.  His greatest pride and joy were his 3 children Jake, Courtney, and Cassidy.

For 28 years he worked tirelessly to bring home the bacon, and his co-workers became his second family.  His loves in life were sitting on a porch with friends, quoting movies, adding stamps to his passport, tailgating and cheering on your Iowa State Cyclones.  On October 16th, his work here came to an end.  He has gone home to join his grandparents and his father Neal.

Left to cherish every memory he gave us are his wife Colleen Bottjen of Ida Grove, IA; children, Jake Bottjen of Urbandale, IA, Courtney Bottjen of Des Moines, IA, and Cassidy Bottjen of Ames, IA; parents, Mary (Gary) Hunwardsen of Kingsley, IA; brother, Jason (Linda) Bottjen of Garden Grove, IA; sister, Jackie (Craig) Larsen of Bondurant, IA; numerous extended family and friends.

Jeffery was preceded in death by his father, Neal Bottjen; paternal grandparents, Albert and Arline Bottjen; and maternal grandparents, Ivan and Ileta Earnest.

“I went to KP High with Jeff. He taught me how to drive a stick shift - his old red pickup truck - three on the tree :) I still drive a stick shift today. We would also play Atarri (sp?) which was a big deal back in the day. Jeff was one of the kindest people I know. Great smile, gentle spirit, easy to connect to. His presence and contributions to this earth will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to Jeff's family.”

“It is a rare person that brings out the best in people around them all the time...Jeff was one of those rare people. I do not believe you could find a single person, that had any level of contact with Jeff, that could say a single bad thing about him. Talk about rare! There are very few people that can live up to that test! I got to know Jeff through work, in that setting Jeff's character really shinned through. It was very clear that Jeff's priority was simply to make things better, as a result people trusted him. I was one of those people that instantly trusted Jeff when he made his journey to Arnold Pennsylvania years ago to help that plant during times of struggle. His sense of humor quickly put people at ease and his genuine personality quick opened people up to accept his help. What a team player! Jeff was a very good person that was taken way too soon, he will be deeply missed. Colleen and family I pray that you take comfort in knowing the Lord must have a bigger plan for Jeff and that is why he was taken so early.”

“I was a worker at Smithfield in Denison , Sept. 9 was my last day . I went into Marty Martins and Troy Davis' office on Sept. 8 like I did everyday and Marty made a phone call to Jeff who was in Omaha for negotiations , he said here this is for you . Jeff had told him to call him when I came in and then Jeff told me how much he appreciated my years of service and hoped I would have a good retirement . That is what kind of a great man he was , I will never forget that and his smile and personality was second to none. He will be missed by me and you have my deepest sympathy I also think of him as a good friend . No other manager would do that , I knew a lot of them I was there for 45 years . You and your family and Jeff are in my prayers .

“Collen and the rest of the Bottjen family. I wanted to take a moment to express my condolences' for the loss of a partner, spouse and father. While we haven't exactly kept in contact over the years since our first meeting St. James, MN. we have had unexpected encounters. Collen, when I ran into you and Jeff in the Omaha airport it was like we'd know each other forever. Jeff and I in recent years (Smithfield acquisition) had more opportunities to re-connect. I could tell from Jeff's enthusiasm he was happy with his job, happy at home and very proud of his children. From the people I've come to know within the Smithfield family, Jeff will be missed by many people at all levels. There's a lot to be proud of, having a husband and father who had such a positive impact on so many people in his life. These are hard times that I cant and wont comprehend but I have to believe that you and the family will have lots of support in the months and years to come from family and friends. If you and the family ever are in the Colorado area Lee and I would love to see you. God bless and take care.”

“I want to express my deepest condolences to the Bottjen family. I had the pleasure of working with Jeff, and I know he will be missed by everyone with whom he crossed paths. It is an old cliché that you don't necessarily remember everything someone says or does, but you never forget how they made you feel. I can say that every time I visited Denison, Jeff always made me feel welcomed, respected, and valued.... a part of his team....that is just who he was.....he will be missed by everyone in the Smithfield family. ”

“Mary and family,

I was utterly shocked the other night when Nate and Rachel called me to tell me what had happened. I'm still in shock. I have so many memories of Jeff and all the trouble that him and Dawn would get into. It only seems fitting that he is now with Dawn in heaven. I hope the two of them together can keep things to a dull roar. I will deeply miss that smile and laughter. Mary you can proud of the man he had become and the many lives he touched along the way. It doesn't seem fair to have to bury a child even when they are an adult. He will always be your baby. May God be with you, Colleen and the entire family.”

“I am so sorry to hear of Jeff's passing. I met Jeff when I first came to Burke in Nevada to interview for a position. I was hired and I enjoyed working with Jeff for the time he was at Burke. He made me feel welcome and spent time helping me in my new position. I always enjoyed running into him at Cyclone wrestling and football. His sense of humor and smile were contagious. Jeff is a person his family can be very proud of. I hope that reading people memories and kind words in some way helps ease your pain of your loss.”

“Colleen and children,

This is extremely difficult. I can only imagine how you and your family are feeling. Jeff was a very dear friend. I know Todd and Jeff were like brothers, and Jeff would have been a great son. As I read the other condolences, there is a common theme of friendliness, sense of humor. fair play, loyalty, straight shooter, and an overall a great human being. They are all true. I will miss him greatly, and know that you will too. And NCAA wrestling tournaments will never be the same without him.

You are in our prayers.

I was so saddened to hear of Jeff's death from my brother Todd. I sincerely think Jeff was one of the kindest and funniest people I've ever known. He always brought joy and laughter to any gathering. Jeff and Smithfield for years had help sponsor a Football team BBQ for the Iowa Hawkeyes even though he was a great Cylcone fan. He came to the feed for the first time this spring. I know he enjoyed his time in Kinnick stadium and the tour of the facilities. We lost one of the Really Good Guys. Keep cheering on the Cyclones Jeff.”
