     Curtis J. Laverty, age 72, of Battle Creek, Iowa (formerly of Griswold, Iowa) passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at the Unity Point Health - St. Luke’s of Sioux City, Iowa.

     Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 2, 2018, at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. Rev. Kevin J. Freese will officiate. Graveside Services will be Saturday, November 3, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. in the Griswold Cemetery of Griswold, Iowa. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. The Christensen - Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Condolences may be sent online at www.christensenvanhouten.com

     Curtis John Laverty, the son of Fred and Olive (Babb) Laverty, was born March 29, 1946, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Curtis grew up in the Carson and Griswold, Iowa area and attended Carson-Macedonia School. 

     During his adulthood Curtis resided at the Adel County Home and worked in the kitchen. He then moved to the Cass County Home in Atlantic, Iowa where he was employed at Cass, Inc. making pallets. In 1999, Curtis moved to Ida Services (ISI) in Battle Creek, Iowa. During his 19 years at ISI, Curtis could be found working in the can room and volunteering at Willow Dale Care Center.

     Curtis enjoyed coloring and painting crosses for his family, listening to Johnny Cash, bowling and was an avid sports watcher. He could be found participating in the Special Olympics, playing bingo, or attending movies at the State Theater in Holstein. Curtis enjoyed volunteering at the local nursing home and visiting the Battle Creek Library to have coffee with his friends. He loved all holidays but especially enjoyed his birthday. 

     Curtis never met someone that he couldn’t strike up a conversation with. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and communities he touched.

     Left to cherish his memory include his sister Phyllis Mundorf of Griswold, IA; sister-in-law Donna Laverty of Griswold, IA; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and great-great nephews.

     He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Olive Laverty; sister Arlene E. Laverty; brothers Carl (Ruth) Laverty and Paul Laverty; and brother-in-law Calvin Mundorf.
