Charles “Chuck” Dean Sick was born September 3, 1931, in rural Shelby County, IA, between Harlan and Avoca to Emil and Mary (Perino) Sick. Charles was a popular name and when he started school in Harlan, IA, there were four students in his class with the same name. The teacher went around and assigned names to each one, Charles, Chaz, Charlie, and Chuck—the name that most of us knew him by.

The summer before his junior year, the family moved to Onawa, IA, where his father ran the North Side Shop. Chuck helped out there until enlisting in the military. Many may have heard stories of St. Louis, Coco Beach, Patrick AFB, and the Bahamas during his time as a radio repairman in the U.S. Air Force. After his honorable discharge, Chuck settled in Ida Grove, IA and began working at United Builders.

In September of 1960 Chuck married Marion Drenkhahn and the couple was blessed with two sons, Steven and Douglas. After Marion passed in 1970, he married Loretta Ehlers in 1971. Chuck and Loretta enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states. Chuck always liked to tour manufacturing plants to see how things were made and the couple made this a part of their vacations. They celebrated 46 years of marriage before her passing in 2017.

Chuck was involved in many different business ventures during his lifetime. In 1967, he opened his first business, Ida Grove Plumbing and Heating. He also received a patent for welding glasses that he invented. Chuck owned a variety of rental property as well as being the owner and operator of the Delux Motel.

Chuck passed away due to complications from a broken heart. He is survived and fondly remembered by his sons Steven Sick of Emmetsburg, IA and Douglas Sick of Dublin, Ireland; grandson Devon Sick of Gilbert, IA; great-granddaughters Peyton and Emery Sick; brother Leo (Nancy) Sick of Puyallup, WA; sister Elsa Martin of Gainsville, FL; many friends and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Emil and Mary Sick; brothers Ernest and Lonnie Sick; two wives Marion Sick and Loretta Sick.

“Chuck and I have been buddies for the longest time, crazy how I knew him by checking blood every week to him telling me how much him and my dad drank coffee together. I will never forget his up spirit words of advice and reminding me I was my father's child. He loved live and always talked about his wife and family ❤️. Such an inspiration to me 💗. ”
