In Memory of Horace G. Cullum

Horace G. Cullum, age 92, of Ida Grove, Iowa (formerly of Texas) passed away on Friday, December 27, 2019, at the Willow Dale Wellness Village of Battle Creek, Iowa.

Horace George Cullum was born on July 30, 1927, in Houston, Texas. He was the son of Hector and Lena (DeGeorge) Cullum. He grew up in Houston and enjoyed playing football, baseball, golfing and worked as a golf caddy. He had the opportunity to try out for the Yankee’s baseball team and was invited to New York to join the practice team but just couldn’t afford the bus ticket.

Horace graduated from Sam Houston High School with the class of 1945. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy, where he served overseas in Japan and transported soldiers on an LST at the end of WWII. After being honorably discharged, Horace took some classes in auto mechanics.  He later owned and operated his own business called Tick’s Amusements.

He was a member of Memorial No. 1298 Lodge of Houston; where he was a Mason in good standing for over fifty years. He looked forward to gathering at his buddy Tom’s place, where they formed the “Deadbeats, Suckers & Liars Club” for fun, food and friendship.  In his later years Horace enjoyed playing golf, fishing and when the sun went down, he was ready to play some cards.

Horace could be found on his front porch swing in the “The Heights” in Houston which he called home from 1963 until 2017. He then relocated to Ida Grove, Iowa, to be closer to his family.

He is survived by daughter, Katherine (Michael) Brogan; granddaughters, Kelly (Justin) Hewitt and Julie (John) Carlson; great grandchildren: Marley Hewitt, Melissa Hewitt, Mitchell Hewitt, and Mary Carlson all of Ida Grove, IA; and sister, Adelene Pardo of Pearland, TX.

Horace was preceded in death by his parents, Hector and Lena Cullum; two sons, Ricky and Michael Cullum.
