Berdine (Bandow) Petersen was born January 14, 1925, in East Boyer Township, Crawford County, Iowa, to Louis and Mildred (Miller) Bandow. She was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa.

Berdine attended Manilla High School, graduating with the class of 1942. She worked for a while at a grocery store in Denison following high school. In 1943, she and some of her friends headed west to San Diego, California. While she was there, she worked at the Ryan Airplane Factory, manufacturing airplanes for World War II (she truly was a “Rosie Riveter”).  On the weekends she volunteered at the U.S.O. (United Service Organization). In 1946, she returned to Iowa and taught country school for one year in Crawford County.

On June 1, 1947, she married Gilbert “Gib” Petersen of Ida Grove at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple had one son, Ronald. Gilbert and Berdine farmed for many years outside of Ida Grove, Iowa, staying on the family farm until 1979. At this time Ron moved to the home place and Gilbert and Berdine moved into Ida Grove

Berdine was a faithful and dedicated member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove for many years, rarely missing a service. She was active in the Ladies Aid and served on the board. She also enjoyed teaching Sunday School. In her spare time, Berdine enjoyed playing bridge, euchre and golfing. Her and Gib enjoyed ballroom dancing over the years and were known for their graceful dancing.

Berdine will be known as a loyal supporter of Ida Grove and the school system. She was an avid sports fan and attended many, many ball games over the years. Berdine was said to be one of the most faithful Falcon fans of all time and was recognized in 2011 with a sportsmanship award from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union for her abiding support. Berdine and her family will always be known for their generosity in providing scholarships for local students.

In addition to her parents, Berdine was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert, in 2007 and their son, Ron, in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her brothers: Melvin Bandow, Edwin Bandow, Irwin Bandow and her sisters: Virgine Ohl and Georgine Sievertsen.

Berdine is survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorials in Berdine’s name may be directed to the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa.
