Ed Alan Campbell, age 71, of Battle Creek, Iowa, passed away on Monday, January 24, 2022, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center of Ames, Iowa.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 31, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. Eugene Tolstedt will officiate. Private Committal Services will be held in the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek, Iowa.  The Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements.  Condolences may be sent online at www.christensenvanhouten.com


Ed Alan Campbell, the son of Ed Jr. and Doris (Wert) Campbell, was born on June 1, 1950, in Battle Creek, Iowa. Ed grew up in in Battle Creek where he was active in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, played sports, and was the center on the high school football team. He received his education from Battle Creek High School graduating with the class of 1968. He went on to attend Drake University graduating with a degree in Political Science in 1971.

Ed returned to Battle Creek after college and worked with many farmers in the area. Eventually he became manager of Campbell Farms. Ed was a friend to everyone; being very helpful to anyone he met in the county and beyond. He became known as the “Sweet Corn King of Battle Creek” for the generous giving of his annual sweet corn crop to anyone who lived in Battle Creek or Ida County.

Ed’s many hobbies included his prized 1955 Chevy, playing cards with the boys, fishing in Canada, Wyoming and at his secret pond, reading, attending bowling tournaments around the country, tending to his large garden, mowing his and other’s lawns, and watching football on TV. He supported the NRA as well as numerous foundations and charities in the county.

Survivors include his sister Kathryn (Bruce) Shell of Sheridan, WY; numerous cousins, a niece; a nephew; extended family and friends.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents Doris and Ed Campbell, Jr.; uncles; aunts; and several cousins.
