Donna Fay Groth, the daughter of Irwin and Bernice (Backhaus) Bruhn, was born on August 24, 1929, on the family farm outside of Mapleton, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa. Donna attended school in Mapleton and graduated from Mapleton High School with the class of 1947.
After graduation she helped on the family farm. On September 19, 1948, Donna was united in marriage to Orville H. Groth in the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple settled down on a farm south of Battle Creek, Iowa and welcomed children Ronald, Roger, Linda, and Dianne.
