Laudelle Marie (McCormick) Weis Baxter was born on May 3, 1922, in Marcus, IA, the daughter of Katie Marie (Stevenson) and Lloyd McCormick. Laudelle graduated from Cherokee High School in Cherokee, IA and later graduated from cosmetology school. She opened her own business in the basement of their home in Omaha, NE, where she resided with her husband Al Weis (deceased) and their two children, Linda Kay Weis Baxter Wood and Christine Ann Weis Baxter Johnson Parrott.
After a divorce, Laudelle moved with her daughters to Ida Grove, IA, where she opened The Kurly Kue Beauty Shop. That is where she met and married Robert M. Baxter (deceased). Robert loved her daughters so much that he adopted them as his own. They lived in Ida Grove until 1963 when they moved to Clearwater, FL, where she resided until 2000. She then moved to Greenwood, IN, where she had her own apartment, then moved in with her daughter, Christine. In 2007 her brother, Monte, moved her back to Ida Grove. She had an apartment before eventually moving into Morningside Nursing Home. When Morningside closed, she was moved to Battle Creek’s Willow Dale Wellness Center, where she resided until her passing.
Laudelle was the oldest of five siblings. There was herself, Dean (Elaine) McCormick, Robert (Karleen) McCormick (deceased), Kathy (Mickey) McCormick Ryhlick, and Monte (Sherrie) McCormick.
Her grandchildren include Brett Walker, Theresa Walker Engel, Keith Baxter Johnson, and Jeremy Johnson. Great-grandchildren are Xavier Walker, Donovan Walker, Brittany Walker, Montana Engel Shelton, Kayla Engel, Brookelynn Johnson, and Lana Johnson. Nieces and nephews include Terry McCormick (deceased), Von McCormick, Tami McCormick Thompson, Robin McCormick Toler, Patrick McCormick, Mark Ryhlick, Cheryl Ryhlick Riley, Mark McCormick, Holly McCormick DeMarce, and Natalie McCormick Dickerson Rekemeyer.
Laudelle was not only a devoted and loving mother to her own two girls, but loved and nurtured each and every one of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She loved fishing, sewing, crossword puzzles, cards, reading, lots of chocolate, and music. In her younger days she and her sister, Kathy, along with a dear friend were in a band together. Laudelle wrote of their songs and they made an album together. She also loved dancing to jazz music with her husband, Robert, and the family.
Laudelle had a very special best friend, Judy Pluth, who went to visit her in the nursing home, hospital or wherever Laudelle was. She took her gifts, played cards with Laudelle (and lost), took her out to eat, shopping, for ice cream, etc., and stayed by her side until she passed. This was a great comfort to her daughters who live in Greenwood, IN and Live Oak, FL and couldn’t get up to visit as much as they would have liked.
Her 100th birthday party in May 2022 was not only a celebration of her birthday, but a celebration of her life while she was still alive. The entire family gathered together to celebrate her. It was an amazing time and memory that we will all have forever.
