In Memory of Rhett Leonard

“Dear Mrs. Leonard, Kelsey, Shelly, the Leonard Family, and Friends,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this time of profound loss.

Although Rhett is no longer with us, his kindness will forever remain in my heart.

I often think back to my freshman year of college when Kelsey invited me to Ida Grove for Thanksgiving. Being so far from home in Zimbabwe, I could never have imagined the warmth that awaited me. From the moment I arrived, Rhett and Mrs. Leonard welcomed me with open arms. For five wonderful days, I wasn’t treated as a guest—I was embraced as family.

I remember a home filled with love, laughter, and genuine care. It was so evident how intentional Rhett and Mrs. Leonard were in building such a close-knit family. Watching them with Kelsey and Shelly, I witnessed a home grounded in love, respect, faith, and joy. It was something truly special, and it has stayed with me all these years.

I’ll always remember Rhett’s wonderful dad jokes that could make anyone smile. I also remember the story of how his name came from the classic film Gone with the Wind. I always thought it was such a wonderful story, and somehow, it suited him perfectly.

Thank you, Rhett, for opening your home and your heart to a young student from Zimbabwe. Your generosity, warmth, and hospitality made me feel that I belonged. What may have seemed like a simple act of kindness to you became one of the most treasured memories of my time in America—a gift I have carried with me throughout my life.

May you rest in eternal peace. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Leonard, Kelsey, Shelly, and the entire Leonard family. May God surround you with His unfailing love, grant you strength for each day, and comfort you with the precious memories of a life so beautifully lived.
