Mary Lou Verschoor, age 81, of Battle Creek, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the Willow Dale Wellness Village of Battle Creek, Iowa.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ida Grove, Iowa. The Father Richard D. Ball will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ida Grove, Iowa. The Christensen - Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Condolences may be sent online to www.christensenvanhouten.com 

Mary Lou Verschoor was born on November 16, 1933 in Alton, Iowa, one of three children born to Henry and Elizabeth (Schwartz) Miller. She grew up in Alton, Iowa and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School.

Mary was united into marriage to John Verschoor on April 19, 1951, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Alton, Iowa. The couple made their home in Hospers, Iowa, and were blessed with eight children: Brad, Karen, Terri, Doreen, Jack, Todd, Kelly, and Jason.

The family relocated to Battle Creek, Iowa in 1969, where Mary went to work at the Orchid Club of Ida Grove, Iowa as a cook. Mary had a true soft spot for children and started an in home daycare with her husband John. Her love of cooking brought her back to cooking for Duke-N-Mins in Battle Creek, Iowa. After Duke-N-Mins closed she went to cook for Sparky’s One Stop Shop in Battle Creek.

Mary retired and moved to Ida Grove, Iowa, where she took the time to enjoy her family. Mary delighted in reading a good book, bowling, gardening, traveling, gambling, and visiting with family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Brad (Donna) Verschoor, of Sioux City, Iowa; Karen Huffman of Sioux City, Iowa; Terri (Larry) Wallace of Battle Creek, Iowa; Doreen (Musa) Grunzweig of Des Moines, Iowa; Jack ( Dede) Verschoor of Kingsley, Iowa; Todd (Becky) Verschoor of Anthon, Iowa; Kelly (Fiancée Tara) Verschoor of Cleghorn, Iowa; Jason Verschoor of Odebolt, Iowa; 29 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; sister, B. Dykstra of Alton, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband John Verschoor; and brother, Robert Miller.
