In Memory of Betty Lunkenheimer

Betty Lunkenheimer, age 91, of Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2017, at the Odebolt Specialty Care of Odebolt, Iowa.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at the St. Martin’s Catholic Church of Odebolt, Iowa. Father Richard D. Ball will officiate. Graveside Services will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, of Carroll, Iowa. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the Mass from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at the St. Martin’s Catholic Church of Odebolt, Iowa. Betty J. Lunkenheimer the daughter of Melvin and Hilda (Loneman) Pietig was born on July 5, 1925, in Carroll, Iowa. She grew up during the great depression and attended St. Angela Academy in Carroll.

On August 28, 1945, Betty was united in marriage to Mike Reis.  The young couple were expecting their first daughter, Judie, when the brakes failed in Mike’s truck which resulted in taking his life on February 9, 1948.  Betty married S. J.  Lunkenheimer on September 30, 1950 and to this union two daughters were born LuAnn and Kim. The family made their home on a farm outside of Odebolt, Iowa.

Betty started a drive in named the Frosty Treat which she owned and operated for six summers serving up tasty cold treats and hot sandwiches. Betty then went to work  as a cashier for Herb’s Foodland in Odebolt for seven years, and retired from the Sac County Telephone Company after fourteen and half years of service..

Betty was a devoted member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church of Odebolt, Iowa, and loved lending a hand in the kitchen for funeral luncheons. She belonged to the Birthday group and a local couple’s card club and enjoyed getting together with her best friend of 62 years Mrs. Marguerite Miller and Mrs. Dorothy Landgraf. She also helped many of her friends get to the Doctor and other places.   Betty was fond of her family, she loved spending time and traveling with them when she could. Especially grandchildren and great grandchildren who held a special place in her heart.  She also loved to tell stories of when she was young.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Mike Reis and S.J. Lunkenheimer; daughter Judie Reis, and sister Jean (Darrell) Paul. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters LuAnn Knobbe of Omaha, NE, and Kim (Mike) Lockhart of Bern, Kansas; grandchildren Amanda Knobbe, Justin Knobbe, Nathan Knobbe, Josh Lockhart, and Jen (Corey) Lathrop; two step grandchildren Philp and Michelle;  eight great-grandchildren; sister Bev (Chico) Kanne of Carroll, IA, and extended family and friends.
