In Memory of Helma Hamilton
Helma Hamilton, age 97, of Ida Grove, Iowa, went home to Heaven on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the Morningside Healthcare Community, of Ida Grove, Iowa.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 2, 2017, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ida Grove, Iowa. The Reverend Richard A. Salcido will officiate; with committal services following in the Ida Grove Cemetery, of Ida Grove, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 1, 2017 at the Christensen –Van Houten Funeral Home, of Ida Grove, Iowa. Helma Margaretha Elise Hamilton was born June 28, 1920, to Emil and Margaretha (Wilken) Mildenstein in Soldier Township, Crawford County Iowa. She attended parochial school and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Soldier Township.
On September 4, 1938, she married Elmer Ernst and the couple was blessed with three children Wayne, Karen and Kenneth. Elmer passed away in 1960. On April 11, 1966, Helma married Joe Hamilton in Barstow, CA. Joe passed away in 2007.
Helma worked as a cook in school systems in California and Arizona. Joe and Helma returned to Ida Grove for their retirement. They loved to travel, play cards with friends and cheer for the Chicago Cubs. Helma was a faithful member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ida Grove.
Helma is survived by her children Wayne (Elaine) Ernst of Port St. Joe, FL, Karen (Dwayne) Salmon of Ida Grove, IA; daughter-in-law Anne Ernst of Modesto, CA; six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Leonard and Marilyn Ernst of Pittsboro, NC and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, son Kenneth, granddaughter Kim, brothers Walt and Loren, and brothers and sisters-in-laws.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the St. Paul Lutheran Scholarship Fund, OABCIG Dollars for Scholars or Horn Memorial Hospital.
