Doris Elaine Frederick, the daughter of Andrew and Mildred (Peterson) Olsen, was born on January 12, 1928, in Storm Lake, Iowa. She grew up on the Stomberg farm east of Alta, Iowa and graduated from Alta High School with the class of 1945. She went on to further her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, where she obtained her degree in teaching.

Doris started her teaching career as a grade school teacher at Aurelia Elementary in Aurelia, Iowa. During her college years, Doris had met Ron Frederick and the couple were later united in marriage. After they welcomed their sons, Brian and Bruce, Doris retired from teaching to stay home and raise her boys.

As their sons were growing up, Doris and Ron started Frederick Insurance out of their home in Alta. In the 1980s the couple relocated the business to downtown Alta. After 50 years together the couple would go their separate ways.

She enjoyed inviting her family, friends and neighbors over. Whether it was for birthdays or a Super Bowl party, Doris was a gracious hostess. She loved to cook and get everyone together. Doris lived for a good game of cards and traveling. Doris also enjoyed staying at the cabin and putzing around the lakes in Okoboji, Iowa.

The most cherished possession to Doris was her family. She loved spending time with them especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her smile along with her little chuckle, Doris could light up a room. She had the gift of conversation and the ability to make a stranger a lifelong friend.

Left to treasure her memory are her son Bruce and wife Nancy Frederick of Alta, IA; grandsons: Jason of Peyton, CO, Zachary (Angie) of Moorhead, MN and Zebedee (Kahlie) of Aurora, CO and their children Elias, Enzo, and Esmè; dear friends Marie, Marilyn, Karen and Della; close neighbors Lee and Colleen, Scott and Carol; friend Laura; card club friends; extended family and other friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents Andrew and Mildred Olsen; and son Brian Frederick.

“I have many great memories of playing either with or against Doris at the Bridge table! She was a terrific player and taught lots of us the ins and outs of Duplicate Bridge. I'll also remember that "school teacher" look I'd get when I messed up. My sypathies to you all. I will have fond memories of your Mom everytime I sit down for a game of Bridge. ”
