Speed was born on November 4, 1928, in Arcadia, Iowa, to Frank and Louise (Aschinger) Schroeder. At the age of four his family moved to a farm south of Odebolt where he developed his life-long love of farming and taking care of animals. He attended grade school at St. Martin’s in Odebolt and graduated from Odebolt High School in 1946. Speed worked the farm raising corn, hay, cattle, hogs, and quarter horses. He enjoyed his years of trucking cattle and hogs to and from many states. Speed was a cattle buyer for Knipe of Omaha and Bookie Packing of Des Moines and ran a ballroom and restaurant.

Many vacations with the family, traveling out west buying cattle, ballroom dancing, playing cards, square dancing, spending time with family, and enjoying cocktails (Black Velvet) were some of his favorite things to do. Speed was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt. Lots of love, patience, and a great love of God got him through the last 95 years,

Survivors include his wife Thelma of Odebolt, IA; 9 children: Slim (Mary) of Odebolt, IA, Gary (Karen) of Lake View, IA, Mike (Vicki) of Odebolt, IA, Leon (Barb) of Lake View, IA, Dan (Cindy) of Odebolt, IA, Mary (Mark) Currie of Storm Lake, IA, Janet (Vince) Cannon of Platte City, MO, Kristie (Bob) Warnemunde of Carroll, IA and Bob of Scranton, IA; honorary son Chad Mohr of Denison, IA; 27 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren; twin sister Marge Albrecht; sisters-in-law Lillian Schroeder, Mary Schroeder, and Kathy Kros; brothers-in-law Tom Kros and Neal Johnson; nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many friends.
