James P. Smith, age 59 of Galva, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center of Sioux City, Iowa. 

No services will be held at this time.

James Patrick Smith, the son of Raymond and Charlene (Harley) Smith, was born on February 4, 1966, in North Charleston, South Carolina. He received his education from North Charleston High School graduating with the class of 1984. James then attended North Greenville College receiving an A.A.S. degree and graduated from Baptist College-Charleston (now known as Charleston Southern University) in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

On March 4, 2000, James was united in marriage to Heather Buchanan in Charleston, South Carolina. On May 3, 2001, the couple were blessed with a son, Noah, in Savannah, Georgia. The family moved to Iowa in 2004 to be closer to family and settled into their home and lives in Galva, Iowa. For the past 20 years, beginning in February 2005, James worked as a Food Safety Quality Assurance Sanitation Manager for Smithfield Foods, traveling throughout the Midwest and from coast to coast training staff, conducting audits, and investigating quality issues at their production/processing plants.

Survivors include his wife Heather Buchanan-Smith of Galva, IA; daughter Caitlin Smith of Florida; son Noah Smith of Maryland; brother Tim (Iwona) Smith of North Carolina; niece Lauren Olivia Smith of Texas; and nephews Nicholas Smith of Colorado, Mark Andrews of South Carolina, and John Andrews of South Carolina.

James was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Charlene Smith; and sister Sherri Andrews.

“I worked with Jim for many years at several Smithfield plants. He always had that infectious smile and welcoming laugh. We spent many nights in plants as sanitation crews prepared the plants for the next day. I will always remember Jim for his ability to get people to cooperate and for his thoughtfulness for all people. He was a good man and I will miss him.”
