Louis Emil Mildenstein, age 64, of Ida Grove, IA, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at the Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center, of Rock Rapids, IA.  

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 8, 2014, at the Morningside Health Care Community of Ida Grove, Iowa. The Reverend Richard A. Salcido will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the Morningside Health Care Community of, Ida Grove, Iowa. Interment will follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery of Ida Grove, Iowa. The Christensen ~ Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Condolences may be sent online to www.christensenvanhouten.com
Louis Emil Mildenstein was born on July 31, 1949 in Denisen, Iowa. The first child born to Loren Emil and Florence Darlene (Schmidt) Mildenstein. The family made their home in Holstein, Iowa where Louis received his early education. 

The family then moved to Ida Grove, Iowa. Due to complications of a life long illness, Louis became home schooled and earned his GED. Louis participated in the Special Olympics and was a lifelong advocate for handicap accessibility in Ida County.

After receiving his GED Louis attended a work training school in Rock Valley, Iowa, where he became a Drill Press Operator for a short time.

Louis made his home at Morningside Health Care Community for 2 ½ years.  He enjoyed going on outings with the residence, as well as feeding the fish. Louis enjoyed his family especially spending time with his niece, Amy (Jeremy) Kuperus, nephew, Andy (Amanda) Mildenstein along with great nephew, Kaden Mildenstein.

Louis enjoyed being outside, as well as, drawing (free hand), making hook rugs, surfing the worldwide web. Louis’s true passion was knowledge of steam locomotives and railroads, he would travel just to look at them and enjoyed the history behind them.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother’s Randy (Cindy) Mildenstein of Ida Grove, Iowa, David (Melissa) Mildenstein of Troy, Alabama, sister Betty Dahl of Battle Creek, Iowa, nieces, Amy (Jeremy) Kuperus, Tammie Mildenstein of Troy, Alabama, nephew, Andy (Amanda) Mildenstein, great-nephew, Kaden Mildenstein.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents, and his grandparents, Herman and Hilda Schmidt, Emil and Maggie Mildenstein.
