Adam M. Carstensen, age 39, of Lake City, formerly of Odebolt, Iowa passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at the Stewart Memorial Community Hospital of Lake City, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, May 02, 2016 at the United Methodist Church of Odebolt, Iowa. The Reverend Ken Miller will officiate. Burial will follow in the Cook Center Cemetery of rural Schaller, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 01, 2016, at the Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home, of Odebolt, Iowa. Adam M. Carstensen was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on May 16, 1976, to Mike and Rebecca “Becky” (Siebrecht) Carstensen.

Adam attended AEA Preschool and went on to AEA School until 1995. He spent a brief time at the Howard Center before joining Opportunity Living in 2003. Adam loved his Opportunity Living family and made many relationships along the way. Spending time on his swing at Opportunity Living with his I Pad mini shuffle singing along to his favorite songs.  He enjoyed cars, trucks, racing, movies, camping and any type of music.

Adam treasured his family time. Going on rides in his brother’s cars or trucks and spending time with his dad in the combine. He brought a smile to you and usually some kind of joke to tell. Adam led a simple but fulfilling life, something we could all learn from.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Kermit and Jean Siebrecht and Gene and Nick Carstensen.   

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Mike and Becky Carstensen of Schaller, Iowa; brothers and their families, Andy (Michelle) Carstensen and children: Brianna, Aidan and Cole of Odebolt, Iowa, Alex (Janelle) Carstensen and children: Hailey and Elaina of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and extended family and friends.

“I remember sweet Adam from Faith, Hope and Charity. Little red head boy with a great sense of humor and laugh. He was darling. He loved so many of our fun activities! So when I saw this today it made me realize the special children who left an impact on us, he was one of our first residents and I have thought about that "little guy" over and over again! “Mike and Becky--I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Though I haven't seen you for several years, probably at my Dad's funeral, I remember teasing you, Mike, about taking care of you as a baby when your mother was expecting Pat. I have always felt empathy for you as parents of Adam because my older son, Chris, who is now 47, is developmentally disabled. It's amazing how much we can learn while raising a child who has "problems", and how much we can appreciate the special bond we form with him. This is not something that we, as parents, can completely explain to others who have not had similar experiences, but I think that we and our sons make us "special" also. “I met Adam and his parents the day he became part of the Opportunity Living family. I did recreation activities with Adam when he lived in Rockwell City. He was such a HILARIOUS, imaginative, caring young man. Adam and I went on several double dates with his longtime girlfriend Lois Lane and Clark Kent in the General Lee (bus). He would also say that while riding the golf cart, that we were racing the General Lee, KIT, and his favorite actual driver, Doug Riley. We usually lost the races, but had a lot of fun! Whenever he would see me at the center, he would day, "There's Marsha. Are you coming to my house?" I would answer his question and ask him what I could call him. His answer was always "Dinkusarealious." A name we made up together. His laugh was infectious and is greatly missed. RIP Adam Michael Knight Carstensen.”

“I am so sorry you are having to go through this. I work at Opp Living and have throughly loved getting to know Adam, he will be greatly missed and I will always remember seeing him in the hallways at work and he always called me Nickel instead of my name and I would say no I'm Pennie and he would then say Hi, Quarter! He was always the best person to talk to and really liked to talk about trunks! Prayers for your family, Pennie RIP Adam my man”
