Hattie K. Susie was born on April 13, 1913, in Climbing Hill, Iowa, to George and Johanna (Iverson) Cassens. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith. She attended rural country school and helped out on the farm. At the age of 6, Hattie’s father George passed away. Hattie continued to live in the Climbing Hill area until she was 8 years old and her mother Johanna married Paul Bumann. The family then relocated to Schleswig, Iowa.
Hattie was united into marriage to Reed Susie on December 5, 1931 in Elk Point, South Dakota. To this union six children were born: Reed Jr. (passed in infancy), Vernon, Beverly, John, Gary, and Sharon. The family lived in different areas eventually settling down on the Susie family farm between Battle Creek and Cushing, Iowa.
Hattie enjoyed being a mother and farmer’s wife. In 1966, husband and father, Reed Susie passed away. She continued to live on the farm and started working outside of the home at Good Samaritan in Holstein, Iowa, for over 20 years before she retired.
She was a faithful member of the St. Paul Midway Lutheran Church of Battle Creek. She volunteered her time to church functions and helping out with keeping the church tidy. She also enjoyed, cooking, gardening, sawing wood, crossword puzzles, playing cards, dominoes, reading, visiting, travelling, and spending time with her family. One of her fond memories at the age of 103 years old, was taking her first ever trip to the Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska.
Hattie lived on the family farm up until February of 2016 when health issues moved her in to Welcov Morningside Healthcare Community. She will be remembered as a kind, giving, devoted, go getter.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving children: Vernon of Cushing, Iowa, Beverly and husband Dan of Ames, Iowa, John and wife Janet of Clinton, Iowa, Gary and wife Norma of Morrison, Illinois, and Sharon of Tucson, Arizona; brother, Albert Cassens and wife Helen of Sturgis, Michigan; sisters-in-laws, Lori Bumann of Schleswig, Iowa, and Irene Bumann of Ida Grove, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and twenty- seven great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Hattie was preceded in death by her parents, George and Johanna Cassens; husband, Reed Susie; son, Reed, Jr. Susie ( in infancy); daughter-in-law, Lorraine Susie (1968) brothers, sisters, and spouses: Kathryn (Bill) Schwarts, Marguerite (Donald) Hess, Lillian (Hugo) Reese, Minnie (Nile) Hess, Marie (Lester) Schwanz, John (Helen) Cassens, George (Ruth) Cassens, Henry (Hazel) Cassens, Robert Bumann, Le Roy Bumann; and extended family.

We send our sincere sympathy to your family. We are sad because our church has lost her great matriarch. Remembering her at her 100th birthday celebration--she seemed so much younger than her age. Loved her smile that she wore. God is with your family as you mourn. He promises to comfort your broken hearts!
