Edna D. “Eddy” Hansen, age 100, of Battle Creek, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the Willow Dale Wellness Village, of Battle Creek, Iowa.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. The Reverend Randy D. Cormeny will officiate, with committal services following in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Christensen – Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, Iowa. Edna “Eddy” Hansen the daughter of Ervin and Matilda (Brodersen) Sands was born on May 11, 1916 on a farm in rural Anthon-Oto, Iowa. She grew up on the farm in Anthon-Oto and attended country school where she learned to speak English as German was the primary language spoken in her home.
When Eddy was a teenager she moved to Battle Creek, Iowa to live with her grandmother Dora Brodersen. She worked as a housekeeper for Elmer and Nola Rickman and also as a clerk in Mr. Rickman’s drug store in Battle Creek.
On March 19, 1939, Edna married Winston W. Hansen in the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. The couple made their home in Battle Creek and were blessed with two children Corliss and Winston Jr.
Eddy was a cook for Duke-N-Min’s Cafe, Willow Dale Care Center, and the Battle Creek group home. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Battle Creek and in her younger years taught Sunday School. Eddy belonged to the Friendly Neighbors Club, the Birthday Club and the St. John’s Ladies Aid.
Eddy enjoyed traveling, sewing, crocheting, embroidery, gardening and canning, crafts, and spending time with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ervin and Matilda Sands; husband Winston W. Hansen; brothers Ernest Sands, Mike (Helen) Sands, and Melvin Sands; sister Sophie Sands; and brother-in-law Donald Hansen.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Corliss Hansen Wheeler of Battle Creek, IA and Winston (JoAnn) Hansen of Isanti, MN; grandchildren Katherine (Chad) Kaddatz, William (Kimberly) Hansen, Kristina (Neil) Graupman, Joan (Kenny) Raap, Linda (Ivan) Conley, and Margaret (Mark) Glanzer; 18 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Ruth Sands of Redwood Falls, MN; beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
