Shortly after high school, Bill joined the United States Army and served during WWII. He honorably served his country overseas in the Philippines and was honorably discharged on January 14, 1946, in Leavenworth, KS.

Bill married the love of his life Margaret Tutt on June 23, 1946, in the Methodist Church in Laurens, IA. The couple settled in Marathon, IA. Bill reenlisted into the Army and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on September 20, 1951, at Camp Carson, CO.

After being discharged from the Army, Bill returned home to his family. He helped farm the family farm located in Laurens, IA, with his father Cecil. He also worked for the local gas station and OK Roofing. After their children were grown, Bill and Margaret relocated to Ida Grove, IA in 1977.

Bill managed Ida Grove Roofing for several years until his retirement. After retiring and the passing of his wife Margaret, Bill continued to live in Ida Grove up until the last 4 years.  He then moved into Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Estherville, IA. He had just recently moved to Accura HealthCare Nursing Home in Milford, IA, to be closer to family.

Bill was a faithful Methodist Church member. In his younger years he enjoyed teaching Sunday School and fulfilling the position of Lay Minister. He took great pride in his service to his country and was a member of the McNamara-Moore Post No. 61 of the Ida Grove American Legion and the local VFW post. During his career he was also a part of the Iowa Roofing Association.
