Wilbert Martin Rohde, the son of William and Jennie (Schoneboom) Rohde, was born on August 1, 1921, in Rural Wall Lake, Iowa. He grew up in Herring, Iowa, on a farm located southwest of Wall Lake.

Wilbert was drafted into the United States Army on January 13, 1942. He served his country during WWII and was in the first wave that landed on Normandy Beach during D-Day. After three years of dedicated service to his country, Wilbert was honorably discharged on October 28, 1945. He returned home through California, where he picked up his pen pal and sweet heart Cecilia Johnson. On June 12, 1946, Wilbert and Cecilia were joined as one in holy matrimony, in the Methodist Church in Wall Lake, Iowa. The couple settled down on the Johnson family farm southeast of Wall Lake and welcomed three children: Stan, Terry, and Tracey.

Wilbert engaged in farming for 49 years before retiring to town. He was a devoted member of the Peace Lutheran Church of Wall Lake and a member of Chalon Post No. 262 of the American Legion of Wall Lake. Wilbert enjoyed fishing, dancing, playing euchre and spending time with his family.
