Robert A. Bailey, age 90, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2020, at the Creekside Assisted Living & Memory Care of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 19, 2020, in the Hayes Township Cemetery of Arthur, Iowa. Pastor Bruce Kaihoi will officiate. Robert Arthur Bailey was born in Boston, MA, on February 7, 1930, son of Arthur and Helen Bailey. His father was born and raised in Needham, MA. His mother was born and raised in Enid, OK. His parents met in the actuarial program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Robert was raised in Wellesley, MA; Williston Park, Long Island, NY; and Ho-Ho-Kus and Ramsey, NJ. He graduated from Ramsey High School in 1947.
After three years at Houghton College in Houghton, NY, Robert was a graduate of the University of Iowa in Iowa City with a B.A. in mathematics in 1951 and an M.S. in statistics in 1953. In 1952 he was married to Shirley Segerstrom at the Arthur Baptist Church which was in Hayes Township, Ida County, near Arthur, IA.
Robert followed his father (and mother) in an actuarial career from 1954 to 1997 including service to: The National Bureau of Casualty Underwriters in New York City; Hardware Mutual Casualty Company in Stevens Point, WI; the Insurance Company of North America in Philadelphia, PA; Bank-A-Count Corporation in Rudolph, WI; the Insurance Department of Michigan in Lansing; the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in Milwaukee, WI; A.M. Best Company in Oldwick, NJ where he was in charge of Best’s ratings and reports on property-casualty insurers; E.W. Blanch Company (reinsurance brokers) in Minneapolis, MN which made him a Partner and awarded him its Employee of the Year Award for 1990; and again at the Insurance Department of Michigan until his retirement in 1997.
In 2015 Robert and Shirley moved to Creekside at Three Rivers Assisted Living and Memory Care in Murfreesboro, TN near two of their children.
Robert was a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society since 1955, served two terms on its board, contributed many papers to the Proceedings of the CAS and to Best’s Review, and in 1993 received from the CAS the Matthew Rodermund Service Award. He was a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries since 1965, served one term on its board, and in 1999 received from the AAA the Robert J. Myers Public Service Award. In 1997 he was elected to the Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame. In 2019 he was awarded the Michelbacher Significant Achievement Award by the Casualty Actuarial Society.
Since 1997 Robert has authored “The Structure of Paul’s Letters.” In 2000 he became a member of the Society of Mayflower Passengers in Michigan and served as its treasurer from 2001 to 2007.
Survivors include his wife Shirley; their six children and spouses: Mary (Mike) Vigilanti of Manchester, MI; John of Milwaukee, WI; Paul (Melody) of Murfreesboro, TN; Steven (Sue) of Germantown, WI; Lois (Jonathan) Brady of Center Sandwich, NH and Mark (Angie) of Smyrna, TN; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his brother Richard (Cindy) Bailey of Bowling Green, KY; and two sisters, Christine Pearce of Travelers Rest, SC and Margaret (Dennis) Cook of Hollister, MO.
