Doris Mae (Nicholson) Bryan, the daughter of Willard and Sarah (Tague) Nicholson, was born on August 19, 1921, in Moorhead, Iowa. She grew up on a farm near Denison, Iowa. The family moved to Dunlap, Iowa, where she graduated from high school with the class of 1939. The family then moved to a farm near Ida Grove, Iowa, in 1941. Doris helped with the farm work during WWII before marrying Kenneth Richard Bryan on February 17, 1946, in Ida Grove. They were blessed with one son, Kenneth Jr. Doris lived the rest of her life in Ida Grove.

Doris was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church and was active in various committees within the United Methodist Women and served on the administrative council. She taught Sunday School and Bible School. As a member of the Order of Eastern Star for over 40 years, she held many offices including the position of Worthy Matron with her son, Ken, serving as Worthy Patron during special events. Always a supporter of the military, she belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved her United States of America. The Horn Hospital Auxiliary was another of her cherished activities. For several years, Doris worked as a receptionist and assistant in the local veterinarian’s office. During her middle years, she and her sister, Dorothy, created silk flower arrangements for weddings and other special occasions.

The most fulfilling/rewarding career for Doris was as a “happy homemaker”. She loved to care for her family and spoil her grand and great-grandchildren as well as spend time sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, reading, and playing on the computer. At 100 years old, she would text her family, follow Facebook activities, and connect with others on Zoom.

Those who live to cherish her memory include her son Kenneth (Kay) Bryan of Ida Grove, IA; granddaughter Kristen (Gale) Wessel of Ankeny, IA; grandson Keith (Laura) Bryan of Coralville, IA; great-grandchildren Logan and Lindsey Wessel, Ella and Jacob Bryan. Many nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews will miss her ready support.

She was preceded in death by her parents Willard and Sarah Nicholson; husband Kenneth Bryan; brothers Floyd, Ralph (Lorraine), and Dale (Margaret) Nicholson; her constant companion and sister Dorothy (Welcum) Figley; grandnephews Kevin Carney and Michael Nicholson.
